Spain Travel Guide
Gaudí's Barcelona, Madrid's museums, Andalusian palaces and late-night tapas.
Updated October 2026
Why visit Spain
Spain mixes big-city energy with a slow, sunny pace of life. Barcelona has Gaudí's Sagrada Família and city beaches, Madrid has world-class art at the Prado and lively plazas, and Andalusia has the Alhambra in Granada, flamenco in Seville and the beaches of the Costa del Sol.
Fast AVE trains link Madrid with Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Málaga in a few hours, and the Balearic and Canary Islands are a short flight away. Expect late dinners — locals rarely eat before 9 pm. This guide covers when to go, how to get around and how to stay online from the moment you land.
Internet & eSIM
Staying connected in Spain
You'll lean on your phone in Spain for metro routes, ride-hailing, tapas recommendations and the timed tickets used at the Sagrada Família and the Alhambra. Free Wi-Fi is common in cafés and hotels, but it rarely works well on the move — exactly when you need directions.
Travellers with a plan from outside the EU often pay high roaming fees in Spain. A Viberest eSIM gives you local data as soon as you land: install it at home by scanning a QR code, switch it on at the airport, and keep your own SIM for calls and texts. EU plans usually roam at home rates, so an eSIM mostly helps if you need extra data.
- Install before departure, turn on when you land
- Keep your own number active for WhatsApp and SMS codes
- Show e-tickets and use maps without hunting for Wi-Fi

BestGoodLess ideal
Spring · Mar–May
Comfortable temperatures for sightseeing. Holy Week processions and Seville's April Fair are spectacular — and very busy.
Summer · Jun–Aug
Perfect beach weather on the coasts and islands, but inland cities often pass 35 °C. Plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings.
Autumn · Sep–Nov
The sea stays warm into October and cities cool down. A great time for Andalusia and city breaks.
Winter · Dec–Feb
Mild in the south and on the Canary Islands, cooler in Madrid and the north. Fewer tourists and lower prices.
Before you go
Spain travel tips
Book the icons early
The Sagrada Família, Park Güell and the Alhambra sell timed tickets that can be gone weeks ahead in high season.
Eat on Spanish time
Lunch is around 2 pm and dinner from 9 pm. Many kitchens close between lunch and dinner — tapas bars fill the gap.
Mind your bag
Pickpockets target busy areas like Las Ramblas and the metro. Keep your phone and wallet secure in crowds.
Tipping is light
Tipping is optional. Rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good table service is generous; at bars, small change is enough.
Plugs and power
Spain uses type C and F sockets at 230 V. Visitors from the UK, US and many other countries need an adapter.
Entry requirements
Spain is part of the Schengen Area. The EU is introducing new digital border checks (EES and ETIAS) for non-EU visitors — check what applies to your passport before you travel.

Spain travel questions
Do I need an eSIM for Spain?
If your mobile plan is from outside the EU, an eSIM is usually far cheaper than roaming and gives you data from the moment you land. EU travellers often roam at home rates but may want an eSIM for extra data.
Will my phone work with a Spain eSIM?
Most recent iPhones, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM. The phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked — check under Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM.
Which mobile networks does the Viberest Spain eSIM use?
Our Spain plans connect through Orange and Movistar, with 5G where available — the same networks local residents use.
When is the best time to visit Spain?
April to June and September to October bring warm, pleasant weather without peak-summer heat. Summer suits the beaches and islands; winter is mild in the south.
Barcelona or Madrid — which should I visit?
Barcelona combines architecture with beaches; Madrid is about art, food and nightlife. They're under three hours apart by high-speed train, so many travellers do both.
Is tipping expected in Spain?
Not really. Service is included, and locals tip little. Leaving some change or around 5–10% for great service is appreciated.
