Portugal Travel Guide
Tiled streets, golden cliffs, port wine and Atlantic sunsets.
Updated October 2026
Why visit Portugal
Portugal is compact, friendly and full of variety. Lisbon spreads across seven hills with yellow trams, viewpoints and fado bars; Porto stacks colourful houses above the Douro river and its port-wine cellars; and the Algarve's cliffs and coves make some of Europe's most beautiful beaches.
Trains link Lisbon and Porto in about three hours, and day trips to fairy-tale Sintra, the Douro Valley vineyards or the surf town of Nazaré are easy. Further out, Madeira and the Azores offer dramatic Atlantic islands. This guide covers when to go, how to get around and how to stay online the whole trip.
Internet & eSIM
Staying connected in Portugal
Lisbon's hills and Porto's lanes are easy to get lost in, and you'll use your phone for tram routes, ride-hailing, restaurant bookings and train tickets. Wi-Fi is widely available in cafés and guesthouses, but not when you're on a coastal trail in the Algarve or crossing the Douro by boat.
If your plan is from outside the EU, roaming in Portugal can add up quickly. A Viberest eSIM gives you local data from the moment you land: install it at home with a QR code, switch it on at the airport, and keep your own SIM active for calls and texts. Travellers with an EU plan usually roam at home rates.
- Install before departure, turn on when you land
- Keep your own number active for WhatsApp and SMS codes

Portugal travel tips
Wear grippy shoes
Portugal's polished limestone pavements (calçada) get slippery, especially on Lisbon's steep streets. Leave the smooth soles at home.
Use contactless
Contactless cards work on many Lisbon and Porto transit gates, and rechargeable travel cards cover metro, trams and some ferries.
Couvert isn't free
Bread, olives and cheese placed on your table usually carry a charge. Send back anything you don't want.
Tipping is modest
Tipping isn't required. Rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good service is common and appreciated.
Plugs and power
Portugal uses type C and F sockets at 230 V. Visitors from the UK, US and many other countries need an adapter.
Entry requirements
Portugal is part of the Schengen Area. The EU is introducing new digital border checks (EES and ETIAS) for non-EU visitors — check what applies to your passport before you travel.

Portugal travel questions
Do I need an eSIM for Portugal?
If your mobile plan is from outside the EU, an eSIM is usually much cheaper than roaming and gives you data for maps, transport and bookings from arrival. EU travellers often roam at home rates but may want extra data.
Will my phone work with a Portugal eSIM?
Most recent iPhones, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM. Your phone must also be carrier-unlocked — check under Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM.
Which mobile networks does the Viberest Portugal eSIM use?
Our Portugal plans connect through Vodafone and NOS, with 5G where available — the same networks local residents use.
When is the best time to visit Portugal?
April to June and September to October bring warm, pleasant weather. July and August are best for beaches; winter is mild and quiet, especially in the south and on Madeira.
Lisbon or Porto — where should I start?
Lisbon has more sights and nightlife; Porto is smaller, cheaper and wonderfully atmospheric. They're about three hours apart by train, so many visitors see both.
Is tipping expected in Portugal?
No. Leaving small change or 5–10% for good service is appreciated but optional.
