United Kingdom Travel Guide
Royal London, Scottish castles, Cotswold villages and a pub on every corner.
Updated October 2026
Why visit United Kingdom
The United Kingdom packs huge variety into a small island. London alone has Buckingham Palace, the Tower, free world-class museums and West End theatre; beyond it, Edinburgh's castle and Old Town, the Roman baths of Bath, the colleges of Oxford, the music heritage of Liverpool and Manchester, and the wild Scottish Highlands.
Trains from London reach most major cities in two to five hours, and many favourite day trips — Stonehenge, Windsor, the Cotswolds, Cambridge — are close to the capital. This guide covers when to go, how to get around and how to stay online from the moment you land.
Internet & eSIM
Staying connected in the UK
In the UK you'll use your phone for Tube and train routes, contactless travel, theatre and attraction tickets, and checking the (famously changeable) weather. Free Wi-Fi is common in cafés, pubs and on some trains, but it's unreliable underground and in the countryside.
Since Brexit, EU mobile plans no longer automatically include free UK roaming, and non-European plans can be expensive. A Viberest eSIM gives you local UK data from the moment you land: install it at home by scanning a QR code, switch it on at the airport and keep your own SIM for calls and texts.
- Install before departure, turn on when you land
- Keep your own number active for WhatsApp and SMS codes
- Live train times and maps on the go

BestGoodLess ideal
Spring · Mar–May
Gardens and parks burst into bloom and prices are moderate. Pack layers — sunshine and showers can arrive in the same hour.
Summer · Jun–Aug
Long evenings (it stays light past 9 pm), festivals and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. The busiest and most expensive season.
Autumn · Sep–Nov
Mild September days, autumn colours in the countryside and fewer crowds. Rain becomes more frequent as winter approaches.
Winter · Dec–Feb
Christmas lights and markets in London and Edinburgh, then cold, short days. Great value for museums and theatre.

United Kingdom travel tips
Tap to travel
In London, a contactless card or phone works on the Tube, buses and many trains, with daily fare caps — no need to buy a separate travel card.
Many museums are free
The British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum and many others charge no entry. Book special exhibitions in advance.
Book trains in advance
Long-distance train tickets are much cheaper when booked ahead and tied to a specific train.
Check the service charge
Many restaurants add a discretionary 10–12.5% service charge. If it's not included, tipping around that amount is customary.
Plugs and power
The UK uses type G sockets (three rectangular pins) at 230 V. Most visitors need an adapter.
Entry requirements
Many visitors who don't need a visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK. Check the official rules for your passport.

0/7FAQ
United Kingdom travel questions
Do I need an eSIM for the UK?
It's the easiest way to have reliable data from arrival. EU plans no longer automatically include free UK roaming, and non-European plans can be expensive — a UK eSIM avoids those charges.
Will my phone work with a UK eSIM?
Most recent iPhones, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM. The phone also has to be carrier-unlocked — check under Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM.
Which mobile networks does the Viberest United Kingdom eSIM use?
Our United Kingdom plans connect through EE and 3, with 5G where available — the same networks local residents use.
When is the best time to visit the UK?
May to September offers the warmest weather and longest days. December is great for festive London; spring and autumn are quieter and often better value.
How do I get around London?
Use a contactless bank card or phone on the Tube, buses, Overground and Elizabeth line. Daily caps mean you never pay more than a set amount per day.
Is tipping expected in the UK?
In restaurants, a 10–12.5% service charge is often already on the bill; if not, tipping around that amount is usual. Tipping in pubs isn't expected.
