Turkey Travel Guide
Istanbul's mosques and bazaars, Cappadocia's balloons and the Turquoise Coast.
Updated October 2026
Why visit Turkey
Türkiye sits where Europe meets Asia, and it feels like it. Istanbul spans two continents, with the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar on one side of the Bosphorus and lively neighbourhoods like Kadıköy on the other. Inland, Cappadocia's fairy chimneys and sunrise balloon flights are unlike anywhere else.
Along the Mediterranean and Aegean, the Turquoise Coast mixes ancient cities like Ephesus with beach towns such as Antalya, Bodrum and Fethiye. Domestic flights are frequent and affordable, so it's easy to combine Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast in one trip. This guide covers when to go, how to get around and how to stay online.
Internet & eSIM
Staying connected in Türkiye
In Türkiye you'll want data for ride-hailing and taxis, translating signs and menus, navigating Istanbul's ferries and trams, and staying in touch with tour operators. Hotels and cafés usually offer Wi-Fi, but you'll be without it on the street, in the bazaar and on day trips.
Roaming in Türkiye is expensive for most foreign plans, including many EU ones, since Türkiye isn't in the EU. A travel eSIM gives you local data from the moment you land — install it before you fly and switch it on at the airport, while your own SIM stays active for calls and texts.
- Install before departure, turn on when you land
- Keep your own number active for WhatsApp and SMS codes
- Translation and maps in bazaars and old towns

Turkey travel tips
Get an Istanbulkart
One rechargeable card covers Istanbul's metro, trams, buses, funiculars and ferries — far easier than single tickets.
Dress for mosques
Cover shoulders and knees, remove your shoes, and women should bring a scarf for their hair. Avoid visiting during prayer times.
Haggle with a smile
Bargaining is normal in bazaars, not in shops with fixed prices. Keep it friendly — and only start if you intend to buy.
Tipping is common
Around 10% in restaurants is customary if service isn't included; rounding up taxi fares is enough.
Plugs and power
Türkiye uses type C and F sockets at 230 V. Visitors from the UK, US and many other countries need an adapter.
Entry requirements
Some nationalities enter visa-free, others need an e-Visa obtained online before travel. Use only the official government site.

Turkey travel questions
Do I need an eSIM for Türkiye?
It's strongly recommended. Türkiye isn't covered by EU roaming deals, so most foreign mobile plans charge high roaming fees there. An eSIM gives you local data from arrival at a fraction of the price.
Will my phone work with a Türkiye eSIM?
Most recent iPhones, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM, as long as they're carrier-unlocked. Check under Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM.
Which mobile networks does the Viberest Turkey eSIM use?
Our Turkey plans connect through Vodafone and Avea/Türk Telekom, with 5G where available — the same networks local residents use.
When is the best time to visit Türkiye?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer warm weather for both cities and beaches. Summer is best for the coast but hot; winter suits Istanbul and a snowy Cappadocia.
How many days do I need in Istanbul?
Three to four days covers the main sights of the old city, a Bosphorus cruise and a visit to the Asian side. Add more if you want to explore at a slower pace.
Is tipping expected in Türkiye?
Yes, around 10% in restaurants if service isn't included is customary. Rounding up for taxis and small tips for hotel staff are appreciated.
