Mexico Travel Guide
Mayan pyramids, Caribbean beaches, cenotes and the food of Mexico City.
Updated October 2026
Why visit Mexico
Mexico is one of the most rewarding countries in the Americas. On the Yucatán Peninsula, Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen combine white-sand Caribbean beaches with Mayan ruins like Chichén Itzá and swimmable cenotes. Mexico City is a vast, cultured capital with world-class museums, street food and colourful neighbourhoods like Coyoacán.
Further afield, Oaxaca is famous for its food and mezcal, and Puerto Vallarta for Pacific sunsets. Domestic flights make it easy to combine the capital with the coast. This guide covers when to go, how to get around safely and how to stay online from the moment you land.
Internet & eSIM
Staying connected in Mexico
In Mexico you'll use data for ride-hailing (often the most convenient way to get around cities), booking tours, translating menus and navigating to cenotes and ruins. Hotel and resort Wi-Fi is common, but coverage around ruins, beaches and on the road is where an eSIM pays off.
Roaming in Mexico is costly for most foreign plans. A Mexico eSIM gives you local data from the moment you land: install it at home by scanning a QR code, switch it on at the airport and keep your own SIM for calls and texts. Coverage is strong in cities and resort areas, more limited deep in the jungle.
- Install before departure, turn on when you land
- Keep your own number active for WhatsApp and SMS codes
- Book rides and tours without hunting for Wi-Fi

Mexico travel tips
Don't drink tap water
Stick to bottled or purified water, including for brushing teeth. Ice in restaurants is usually made from purified water.
Use registered transport
Book ride-hailing apps or official taxis from ranks and airports rather than flagging cars on the street.
Carry pesos
Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, but markets, street food and small shops are cash-only. Pay in pesos for better rates than dollars.
Tip around 10–15%
Tipping is customary in restaurants (10–15%) and for tour guides, drivers and hotel staff.
Plugs and power
Mexico uses type A and B sockets at 127 V. Visitors from Europe and many other countries need an adapter.
Entry requirements
Visitors from many countries can enter Mexico without a visa for tourism, but requirements depend on your passport. Check the official immigration information before you travel.
