Historical significance Before modern machinery arrived, windmills played an important role in island life. Powered by the strong Aegean winds, they were used to grind grain into flour for local communities. Like many Greek island windmills, the Emporio windmills were built in a simple cylindrical style with whitewashed stone walls and wooden sails.
