Itinerary

  1. 1

    Morioka Hachimangu

    1 hour

Morioka Hachimangū is a Shinto shrine in the city of Morioka, Iwate in northern Japan. The shrine is noted for its annual festival on the second Saturday in June, which is famous for the Chagu Chagu Umakko, a horse parade which was recognized in 1978 as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

  2. 2

    Morioka Castle Ruins

    2 hours

One of the main tourist attractions in the city is Morioka Castle Ruins Park, the grounds where Morioka Castle once stood. The castle was demolished in 1874 and left to waste. However, in 1906 the site was cleaned up and renamed Iwate Park. It is a popular recreation area for the locals and a popular cherry blossom spot.

  3. 3

    Hoonji Temple

    2 hours

Hōon-ji is a Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple located in the city of Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Its main image is a statue of Shaka Nyōrai, although the temple is more famous for its statues of the 500 Rakan.

  4. 4

    Morioka Handi-Works Square

    1 hour

This is a facility where you can “see, touch, and create” various traditional craftworks and foods of Morioka. There are 2 main areas: the Workshop Area and the Exhibition Area. In the Workshop Area, there are 14 workshops where you can buy products, watch professional craftsmen at work, and get hands-on experience making original goods. An easy activity for starters is making Nambu sembei rice crackers, which is done in a similar manner to Belgian waffles. Another easy activity is putting flavored syrup on plain dango or dumplings. The dango store has very unique dango, such as cream dango and okaka ( dried bonito flakes ) dango. In the Exhibition Area, over 3,500 local specialties are sold. There is also a replica of a Nambu magariya house, a traditional L-shaped building in which a stable is joined to a house.
