Overview

What sets this tour apart is its focus on everyday life in divided Berlin. Rather than concentrating only on political events, it explores how ordinary people experienced the Cold War on both sides of the Wall. Through personal stories of daily routines, restricted travel, espionage, border deaths and remarkable escape attempts, the history of the divided city becomes tangible at authentic locations. Highlights include the immersive Mauer Panorama by artist Yadegar Asisi, which vividly recreates life beside the Berlin Wall, and the Palace of Tears, where countless emotional farewells took place between East and West Germans. The tour also visits Alexanderplatz, the symbolic centre of East Berlin, the monumental Karl-Marx-Allee, and the East Side Gallery. Together, these sites reveal the realities of repression, resistance, reunification and hope, offering a vivid, balanced and deeply human perspective on Cold War Berlin.

    Itinerary

    1. 1

      Stop 1

      20 min

See one of the few original sections of the Berlin Wall preserved in its historic location. Gain an introduction to the Cold War and the division of Berlin, and experience the oppressive atmosphere created by the border fortifications that once cut through the heart of the city. Standing beside this authentic remnant, you will begin to understand how the Wall shaped everyday life and transformed Berlin into the focal point of the Cold War.

    2. 2

      Checkpoint Charlie

      10 min

Visit the memorial to the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin. Learn how this former Allied checkpoint became a symbol of the Cold War and hear about dramatic escape attempts, espionage and the tense 1961 tank standoff that brought the superpowers to the brink of conflict. Standing at this iconic location, gain insight into the realities of crossing the border and the daily challenges faced by Berliners living in a divided city.

    3. 3

      Asisi Panorama Berlin

      30 min

Step inside this extraordinary 360° immersive installation and experience what life was like in the shadow of the Berlin Wall. Through remarkable detail, authentic sounds and the artist’s personal memories, the panorama vividly recreates a typical day in the divided city, offering a unique perspective from both East and West. It is one of the most powerful ways to understand the everyday reality of Berliners living alongside the border. Admission to the Asisi Panorama is included in your tour.

    4. 4

      Palace of Tears

      30 min

Der Tränenplalast / The palace of tears: Visit this former border crossing terminal, now a museum in its own right and a poignant reminder of Germany’s division. Once the departure point for travellers leaving East Berlin, it witnessed countless emotional farewells that gave it the nickname “Palace of Tears.” Step into one of the original passport control booths and experience what it felt like for visitors returning to West Berlin before 1989, gaining a tangible sense of the restrictions and tensions of life in a divided city.

    5. 5

      Alexanderplatz

      10 min

Explore Alexanderplatz, the symbolic heart of East Berlin and a showcase of socialist urban planning. Surrounded by imposing modernist architecture, the square reflects the ambitions and ideology to rebuild the city as capital of the Communist 'GDR'. It was also the site of one of the largest demonstrations in German history, when hundreds of thousands gathered on 4 November 1989 to demand political reform, just days before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

    6. 6

      Karl-Marx-Allee

      30 min

Walk along Karl-Marx-Allee, Europe’s longest listed monument and one of East Berlin’s most impressive boulevards. Designed to showcase the ambitions of the new socialist state, its monumental architecture reflects the ideals of post-war reconstruction and socialist classicism. The avenue was once the stage for grand parades, public celebrations, everyday life in the GDR, and moments of political unrest. As you walk its wide boulevard and imposing facades, you gain a powerful sense of the scale, ideology and lived reality of East Berlin.

    7. 7

      East Side Gallery

      20 min

Visit the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall and today an open-air gallery of internationally renowned murals. Once a symbol of division and repression, this preserved stretch of the Wall now stands as a powerful canvas of artistic expression, hope and political commentary. As you walk along the riverfront, discover how artists from around the world transformed this historic structure into a lasting monument to freedom, change and reunification. The tour will end here and you can either continue to browse the murals at your own speed or your guide will bring you to 'Warschauer Straße' U + S-Bahn Station.

    Meeting and pickup

We meet at the main entrance of the Gropius Bau. If you arrive by taxi or driver they will be able to drop you off right there. Your guide will wear a lanyard with their name.
