Overview

This unique experience is guided by a genuine Japanese Kintsugi artisan who practices the craft daily. Your master meticulously teaches each step in English, passionately conveying the deep charm of their traditional work, despite any language barriers. You will spend invaluable time with a local Japanese master, learning the history and philosophy of Kintsugi. Finish a unique, one-of-a-kind vessel with your own hands and take home this cherished, functional souvenir.

What's included

  • Instructor-led lesson: Step-by-step guidance by certified Kintsugi artisans.
  • Use of all tools and necessary materials including real 23K gold powder and natural Urushi lacquer.
  • Souvenir: The Kintsugi piece you finish in the final step (food-safe).
  • Pre-prepared ceramic vessels

    Itinerary

In this intensive 90-minute workshop, you will not only experience key hands-on procedures—the first step (collaborative restoration) and the very final step (gold finishing)—but also gain insight into the profound culture of embracing imperfection. First Half: Collaborative Restoration You will participate in one essential intermediate step of the full Kintsugi process—such as gluing, filling chips with sabi urushi, or applying black urushi lacquer. The specific step will be selected by our artisans based on the condition of the vessels. This is a collaborative restoration: Your work will be passed on to future guests, like a relay, as together we bring a broken piece back to life, step by step. (Note: The vessel used in this step is a work-in-progress and cannot be taken home.) Second Half: The Golden Finish You will experience the glorious final stage of applying real Urushi and 23K gold. Your Souvenir to Take Home: The finished Kintsugi piece you complete in the final stage is made with food-safe materials and is yours to keep as a beautiful souvenir. (Note: The vessels used in the first and final steps are different.)
